Laoag and That Version of Ilocos Empanada

Ilocos Norte Capitol in Laoag City

The City of Laoag in Ilocos Norte is one of the northernmost cities in the country and the fact that it stays the same the way it was before (it looks like Vigan less the famous Calle Crisologo and the other popular museums), the place has its own charm, and if only we have time to explore this place, we would have done it. Screw this one-day Ilocos trip, I swear, but at least we landed on one of the bustling regions in Northern Luzon.

Laoag Empanada
We stopped by the park adjacent to the Capitol of Ilocos Norte, a masterpiece in Laoag. It was just in time for a hot summer lunch inside a food court near the space where the tourist bus was parked. The city parks of Laoag were as beautiful as the ones in Vigan. I am not though familiar with the names of them. I think one of the more popular ones is the Aurora Park, with the Tobacco Monument on it.

And so there we ate for lunch, and since one of the more popular pasalubong in Ilocos is empanada, I bought one just to sample it. It says there “Laoag Empanada”. When I told a friend of mine who is from Candon, Ilocos Sur that I ate an empanada cooked in Laoag, I asked her what’s the difference of the ones sold in Vigan and the ones in Laoag (or the difference of the empanada versions of Sur and Norte). She said the there are more veggies in the Sur version complementing their tasty longganisa. When I asked the vendor of empanada in Laoag, she said they use papaya instead of sayote. Well I actually do not know the exact differences of both since I still haven’t tasted the empanada of Vigan.

I’ll say that the empanada tastes real empanada unlike the so-so version of northern Tarlac, where most residing people are Ilocanos too. Maybe the authenticity really roots back to where it originated. The empanada that I ate has thinner wrap with more meat and veggie fillings. I ate it on our way to my most wanted scenic spot in Ilocos Norte—Bangui Wind Farm.
