Coconut and sunset in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. |
I couldn’t imagine anymore how tight our trip was. The most obvious proof
was our last destination where we only spent like thirty minutes on the shores
of Pagudpud. Yes. THIRTY minutes. On a white sand beach. Oh come on, are we
even there yet?

Pagudpud is the northernmost coastal town of Ilocos Norte. By that alone,
you should already know how faaaaaar Pagudpud is from Manila. It is hundreds
and hundreds of miles away from the capital, and even if we didn’t start from
Manila during our trip, it took us about 11 hours to reach Pagudpud for its
beaches. It is really a far flung area, where articles say that there is not
even a single ATM existing in the town. Sounds remote, right?
Other than the white sand beach, there are other tourist spots in or near
Pagudpud. In fact, if you are planning a trip to Pagudpud, you can hire locals
to tour you to the different scenic spots in this part of Ilocos Norte. Because
this trip was not customized, I was not able to see Kapurpurawan Rock
Formations (and a friend of mine told me how amazing that was). One may also
witness nature’s craft through Bantay Abot Caves, Kabigan Falls and Blue
Lagoon. Patapat Viaduct, an astonishing series of bridges adjacent to the coastal
mountains, where one can hear the sounds of waves crashing through the shore
while driving a winding road with a good view of the mountains

Pagudpud Beach is a nice beach. I haven’t seen though its whiteness under
a scorching noon sun because we arrived in Pagudpud just in time for the
sunset. It wasn’t white at all, maybe because of the sun. And for that reason,
if I will compare Patar Beach in Bolinao and Pagudpud Beach in Ilocos Norte, I’d
give my vote to Patar. Maybe I just need sometime to appreciate Pagudpud, but
honestly, Patar is different. Patar Beach is just amazing, whether it be
morning, noon or afternoon. Pagudpud Beach, ahhh, it is still beautiful. It just
lacks that charm. However, those windmills from afar add a few positive points
to the beach. And the fact that it is very, very far will make you realize that
the journey indeed is what makes it worthy.
What I love in Pagudpud is its sunset and coconut trees. The waters are
also calm (in Saud). And being it one of the more popular beaches in Luzon is
in contrary with the fact that there are only few people when we went there (it
was summer time then), the main reason I think is its distance from Manila.
After a few minutes of watching the sunset, which was indeed perfect, we
went back to our bus seats, left Pagudpud, made our way to the pasalubong
station in Vigan and drove away. After sometime, I realized we were already home.
One day in Ilocos was already over.
